|Assets:||Has a great combination of size, quickness and command of the butterfly style. Can steal games for his team. When he's on his game, he's confident (even cocky in a good way) and square to shooters, and plays big in the net.|
|Flaws:||When he's off his game, he tends to flop around a lot, including a bad habit of going down on his belly. Needs to avoid lapses in concentration. Isn't a very good puck-handler. Can be beaten high on his glove hand. Mentally, he lets things get to him.|
|Career Potential:||Quality, yet fragile veteran goaltender.|

Roberto Luongo wants to be a starter | 05/10/2013 4:34 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo doesn't want to spend another season serving as Cory Schneider's backup.
Impact"Who knows what is going to happen," he said. "I think we are all aware of what the situation is. . .my main goal is to be a starter. I want to play and feel like I still have a lot to give. At the end of the day that's what I want, so we'll see what happens." When GM Mike Gillis spoke to the media he said it was "unlikely" that Luongo would be back with the Canucks next season, so it appears as though he will try to grant the veteran goaltender's wish to play elsewhere. For that to happen, Gillis may have to accept less than he was asking for previously.
GM Gillis expects to trade Roberto Luongo | 05/09/2013 4:35 PM
NewsGM Mike Gillis said he expects to trade Roberto Luongo over the summer.
ImpactLuongo spent the majority of the 2013 season as Cory Schneider's backup, while posting a 9-6-3 record with a .907 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average. Due to Schneider's groin injury, Luongo also started two games in the playoffs for the Canucks where he earned similar statistics with a .915 save percentage and a 2.57 GAA. Gillis was unsuccessful in his attempts to move Luongo at the trade deadline and he may have to soften his asking price if he wants to get a deal done.
Roberto Luongo is ready if needed for Game 4 | 05/06/2013 5:31 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo said he's ready to go if he gets the nod in Game 4, with the Canucks facing elimination from the playoffs.
Impact"If I'm called upon, I'll be ready." Luongo said. "If not, Cory will be ready as well. It's his team and whatever happens I will be 100 percent supportive. We just have to make sure when we come to the rink, starting tomorrow, we are 100 percent dedicated to winning the hockey game, doing whatever it takes whether that is taking a punch in the face, blocking a shot with your teeth. If we have 20 guys ready to do that in the next game, I like our chances." Schneider allowed five goals on 28 shots in his first game back Sunday night from his undisclosed injury, but we would assume he gets the start. Stay tuned.
SJ coach wouldn't mind Canucks net change | 05/05/2013 10:05 AM
NewsSan Jose coach Todd McLellan said he would not mind a change in goal for the Canucks in Game 3.
San Jose Mercury News
ImpactWell, this ought to get the folks in Vancouver up in arms. Roberto Luongo has taken over for the injured Cory Schneider and has been great in both games but Schneider, who was unable to even back up Luongo in the first two games, made the trip to San Jose, feeding the rumor mill that he would play in Game 3. "It may be a great thing for us. I think Luongo's been tremendous," McLellan said. "If they want to take that quality of a goaltender out of the lineup and go to the other one, we'll take our chances with that as well." Stay tuned.
Luongo praises Burns after Sharks beat him | 05/04/2013 4:22 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo had nothing but praise for San Jose Sharks' Brent Burns after Vancouver suffered a 3-2 overtime loss on Friday.
CSN Bay Area
ImpactBurns set up Raffi Torres on the deciding goal in that contests. "Burns did an unbelievable play. He was holding it and faking it," Luongo said. "I was trying to stay patient with him, and he ended up feeding it across for a one-timer that Raffi put upstairs. It was a good goal by them." Cory Schneider entered this season with the expectation that he would replace Roberto Luongo as the team's starting goaltender. That largely happened despite the fact that Vancouver wasn't able to trade Luongo. Now Schneider is dealing with an undisclosed injury, Luongo has been filling in. Luongo has a 2.91 GAA and .902 save percentage and the Canucks are down in the series 2-0.
Canucks blow lead again to fall down 2-0 | 05/04/2013 1:34 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo stopped 26 of 29 shots as the Canucks lost 3-2 in overtime Friday night.
ImpactThe Canucks had a 2-1 lead heading into the final minute but allowed the Sharks to rally for the second straight game. While it's hard to fault him on the game winner, Luongo will surely catch a lot of flak for not securing the puck on the game-tying goal, which Patrick Marleau batted in after the puck slipped through Luongo's pads. Cory Schneider didn't practice Thursday, but it's hard to imagine Luongo starts Game 3 if Schneider is in any way able to play.
Roberto Luongo falls short against San Jose | 05/02/2013 1:39 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo lost his third consecutive playoff game (first and possibly last of 2013) as the San Jose Sharks beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 in Game 1 on Wednesday.
ImpactIt was hardly Luongo's fault, although national and local media members probably won't let that stop them from stirring the pot. Luongo was strong through two periods in holding the Sharks to one goal, but was overwhelmed in the third, ultimately stopping 25 out of 28 shots.

Vancouver Canucks on Twitter
ImpactThe Canucks will go with Luongo to open the 2013 playoffs because Cory Schneider is still dealing with an undisclosed injury. The veteran netminder will be looking to bounce back after he ended the regular season with an embarrassing loss to Edmonton, where he allowed seven goals on 37 shots.
Luongo chokes in third | 04/28/2013 6:42 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo allowed seven goals on 37 shots, including six in the third period, as the Oilers pounced on a distracted Canucks team in the regular season finale.
ImpactNightmare or blessing? Perhaps the loss will wake the Canucks up ahead of their playoff opener, but for Luongo, the loss confirms he'll only see post-season action in the case of an injury or major struggling from Vancouver's starting goalie Cory Schneider.
G Roberto Luongo gets start for Canucks today | 04/27/2013 11:58 AM
NewsThe Vancouver Canucks will rest their No. 1 goaltender, Cory Schneider, for their regular-season finale today against the Oilers in Edmonton, meaning Roberto Luongo will get the start.

Roberto Luongo suffers 3-1 loss to Ducks | 04/26/2013 1:45 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo made 27 saves in the Canucks 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
ImpactLuongo has been great when called upon and the Canucks may need to call on him in the playoffs. He is one of the best goalies in the NHL still, but unfortunately for him, Cory Schneider has been even better. He isn't likely to see much action once the playoffs begin so he isn't worth drafting unless Schneider's injury gets worst.
Luongo says he's starting Saturday as well | 04/25/2013 3:57 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo said he will play Saturday's game in Edmonton in addition to the start will get at home versus Anaheim on Thursday night.
ImpactCory Schneider has a "body injury," according to coach Alain Vigneault, but the ailment doesn't appear to be anything serious. Luongo will play the last two regular-season games of the year and Schneider may be ready to go when the playoffs begin.
Roberto Luongo will start Thursday vs. Ducks | 04/24/2013 2:36 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo will start for Vancouver on Thursday night when the Canucks host Anaheim.
ImpactIt may be Luongo's final home game with the Canucks if he's traded or bought out by the team this summer. Cory Schneider, who will sit Thursday due to an undisclosed injury, is projected to carry the load for Vancouver during the playoffs.
Roberto Luongo remains unbothered as backup | 04/24/2013 11:27 AM
NewsAlthough Vancouver associate coach Rick Bowness wouldn't say on Tuesday who will start in goal on Thursday against Anaheim in the Canucks' final home game of the season, it's assumed that Cory Schneider will get his fifth straight start and also carry on for the last regular season game in Edmonton on Saturday to be primed for the playoffs next week.
ImpactBut Luongo - who last played April 15 - claimed it doesn't bother him that he could potentially have played his last game of this season. "It doesn't matter either way," said Luongo, the only goalie and one of just eight players at practice Tuesday. "I'm here right now and there's still a lot of hockey left to be played. Personally, I don't see it that way. I'm not really thinking about that. My focus and the team's focus is playing those last two games and winning and heading into the playoffs on the right note. It's a long haul. Things happen so you never know what the future holds."
Roberto Luongo gets win Monday | 04/15/2013 10:40 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo made 36 saves in the Canucks 5-2 win over the Predators Monday night.
ImpactLuongo stopped 36 of 38 shots in a surprise start four days ago because Cory Schneider had the flu and was solid again tonight. He should get at least one more start during the final two weeks of the regular season, while playing second fiddle to Schneider. He still remains a very nice play as a spot starter.
Roberto Luongo gets the nod Monday | 04/15/2013 6:24 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo will start on Monday.
ImpactLuongo will look to build off of his 40-save victory on Wednesday. He has a 2.36 GAA and .911 save percentage in 17 games this season.
Roberto Luongo 'needed' win Wednesday | 04/11/2013 11:35 AM
NewsIt sounds like Wednesday's 4-1 victory over Calgary meant a lot to Roberto Luongo.
ImpactLuongo stopped 40 of 41 shots in a surprise start because Cory Schneider had the flu. "It was not a statement, but I needed to do this for myself," said Luongo. "I've been through a lot the last few weeks and I want to make sure I showed the guys that I'm here for the rest of the year and 100 per cent dedicated. I was nervous. Go figure. After 12 years and I wanted to get a chance to win. I got those butterflies right away and be a part of competition again." Schneider should remain the Canucks top goaltender, but this start should help Luongo feel a bit more confident going into the playoffs.
Roberto Luongo shines in surprise start | 04/11/2013 12:25 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo unexpectedly started because of Cory Schneider was suffering from the flu on Wednesday, and he made the most of it.
ImpactLuongo stopped 40 out of 41 shots as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 4-1. That marks his eighth win in the season. He's played in just two games since March 18, but maybe this will earn him more reps.
Roberto Luongo remains with Canucks | 04/03/2013 3:14 PM

Roberto Luongo plays well after long break | 03/31/2013 8:25 AM
NewsDespite not feeling all that comfortable, Roberto Luongo performed admirably in relief of Cory Schneider in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Oilers.
Impact"It didn't feel too good out there," Luongo said. "It was pretty much a battle the whole night. I was caught out of position a few times and had to make some saves I'm not used to making. The good thing is I battled. The veteran goalkeeper gave up a goal to Taylor Hall on the first shot he faced after the entering the game then allowed Hall to complete the hat trick soon after, but he settled down and shut the door the rest of the way. In all, he allowed two goals on 22 shots in the loss.
Robert Luongo doesn't expect to be blindsided | 03/30/2013 12:34 PM
NewsThe Canucks are making one final push to trade Roberto Luongo before Wednesday's trade deadline.
Impact"There are a lot of possibilities," Luongo said Friday. "We'll see what happens." Luongo compared his situation to Jarome Iginla, who was told a month ago he'd be traded and was a few days ago, to the Pittsburgh Penguins. "I don't think I will be blindsided," Luongo said. "[The trade] has been a long time coming. It's something you expect one way or the other. Kind of like Iggy. They told him he would probably get traded a month in advance. In situations like that I don't think you can get blindsided."
Report: Leafs, Canucks talking Luongo again | 03/29/2013 12:39 PM
NewsThe Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks resumed talks about a Roberto Luongo this week, Damien Cox of The Toronto Star reports.
The Toronto Star
ImpactWith Cory Schneider basically grabbing hold of the Canucks' No. 1 goalie job, Luongo has been relegated to backup status, which he said he's OK with. Cox also reports the Leafs could target Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff, who reportedly threatened not to report to a new team if dealt, or stick with the current duo of James Reimer and Ben Scrivens for the rest of this season. With the trade deadline set for Wednesday, we suspect this won't be the last we hear of Luongo trade talk.
Luongo ready for whatever happens at deadline | 03/28/2013 2:32 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo is prepared to ride out the remainder of the season as Vancouver's backup goaltender.
ImpactThe NHL trade deadline is April 3 and it doesn't look like he'll be moved. "I was fully aware of all the scenarios, especially being here past the deadline, or whatnot," he said. "It's stuff that I had a lot of time to think about during the lockout and I'm fully prepared for. Whatever happens, I'll accept and be a good teammate. I'm trying to be as positive as I can and work hard and make sure that I'm ready. Things change quickly in the league." Luongo has watched from the bench as Cory Schneider has started five straight games and won them all. However, that doesn't mean that he won't get another opportunity down the line.
G Cory Shneider likely to start for Canucks | 03/23/2013 12:39 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo says he doesn't think he will start in net for the Vancouver Canucks when they visit the Kings in Los Angeles today.

Canucks give Luongo lots of support Thursday | 03/15/2013 12:58 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo kicked out 29 of 33 shots in a 7-4 victory Thursday night.

NewsRoberto Luongo rebounded from a pair of poor outings Tuesday by posting a 2-1 shootout win over Columbus.
ImpactHe stopped 26 of 27 shots in the contest and all three shootout attempts to earn his sixth victory of the season. Luongo hasn't been seeing much action lately, so he needed a strong showing like this to get back into the team's crease picture moving forward.
Roberto Luongo will play Tues. versus Jackets | 03/11/2013 4:04 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo will get back in Vancouver's crease Tuesday night against Columbus.
ImpactHe has warmed the bench for eight of the past 12 games and Cory Schneider has started five of the team's last six contests. "Coming into this season, I kind of knew what the situation would be," Luongo said Monday. "The last couple of games I was in there, obviously I had a really bad game in Detroit and I gave up one bad goal against Calgary. You have to look at yourself in the mirror sometimes and expect more out of yourself. That's what I expect tomorrow." He has surrendered 11 goals in his past two outings and the Canucks may not have an easy time with the suddenly hot Blue Jackets, who will enter the contest riding a five-game win streak.
Roberto Luongo defeated by Flames Sunday | 03/04/2013 12:23 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo rejected just 21 of 24 shots in the Canucks' 4-2 loss to Calgary Sunday evening.
ImpactThe stats don't provide an adequate depiction of the game Luongo played, as he was forced to make many difficult stops in the contest. His season-long numbers continue to look strong, but Cory Schneider should be in goal for Vancouver's next game regardless.

NewsRoberto Luongo had an embarrassing afternoon in net, giving up eight goals in the Canucks' 8-3 loss to the Red Wings on Sunday.
ImpactThe goaltender made only 20 saves as his goals-against average rose from 1.45 to 2.11 and his save percentage decreased from .941 to .916. After a start like this, it wouldn't be surprising to see Cory Schneider receive the next few starts, beginning with Tuesday's.

Luongo wins fourth straight | 02/13/2013 2:06 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo was strong in net once again, turning aside 25 of 26 shots in Vancouver's 2-1 win over Minnesota on Tuesday night.
ImpactLuongo's won four straight and has allowed just four goals in that stretch. He certainly isn't helping the Canucks' coaching staff settle the team's goaltending situation. If you have him on your roster, definitely start him when he's in net for Vancouver. However, until he can separate himself from Cory Schneider, his playing time is too up in the air to garner him a top fantasy goalie ranking.

Canucks.nhl.com on Twitter
ImpactThe fact that they're going right back to Luongo after two strong starts by Cory Schneider says a lot about how they view their current goaltending situation. Luongo and Schneider should continue to split the Canucks' goaltending duties evenly until one begins to clearly outplay the other or Luongo is traded.
Canucks GM prepared to keep Roberto Luongo | 02/09/2013 12:07 PM
NewsThere won't be any clearance sale on Roberto Luongo.
ImpactCanucks general manager Mike Gillis reiterated Friday that he is prepared to keep Luongo and fellow goalie Cory Schneider all season and would be entirely comfortable doing so. Gillis also suggested any team wanting Luongo will have to pay the price. "There is a lot of talk going on," Gillis said. "But there is this presumption that you pick up the phone and make a trade. Well, it doesn't happen that way and there is usually a long process building up to it and I think Roberto has come in here and has continued to show what a quality person and quality goaltender he is. And if you want to acquire that, you have to pay a price for it." In other words, in Gillis's opinion, Luongo's solid play so far this season has only served to increase his value on the trade market.
Roberto Luongo shines in 3-2 shootout loss | 02/05/2013 5:13 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo made 23 saves in the Canucks 3-2 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Roberto Luongo will start again on Monday | 02/04/2013 3:40 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo will start in his fourth straight game on Monday.
ImpactSo much for Cory Schneider being the team's number one goaltender. While Schneider will get playing time this season, it looks like Vancouver will simply ride the hot goaltender for most of the campaign. Eventually the Canucks will need to trade a netminder because they have too much of their cap dedicated in goaltending as it stands, but that might not happen until the summer. With the schedule condensed, having two top-tier goaltenders is a big advantage that the Canucks have over most teams.
Roberto Luongo gets the 3rd star of the week | 02/04/2013 2:38 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo earned the third star of the week.
ImpactLuongo allowed just three goals over three starts last week and finished with a 2-0-1 record. Before the season started, it was assumed that Luongo would be traded to clear the way for Cory Schneider, but for now it looks like Vancouver will simply ride the hot hand.

ImpactBobby Lou is 2-0-1 in his last three starts, putting together some fantastic performances that have kept Cory Schneider planted on the bench. It's hard to tell what will come of this - GM Mike Gillis was at the Pittsburgh Penguins-Washington Capitals game for "scouting" reasons - but Luongo owners have to feel great about gambling on him at the moment.
Canucks impressed with Roberto Luongo's play | 02/02/2013 12:28 PM
NewsHe was supposed to be the Vancouver Canucks' backup goaltender to Cory Schneider this season -- that is, if he didn't get his wish to be traded -- but there's little doubt now that Roberto Luongo has resurfaced as the team's Numero Uno in net.
ImpactLuongo turned aside 27 of 28 shots in regulation and then all four Blackhawks he faced in the shootout en route to the Canucks' 2-1 victory over Chicago in Vancouver Friday night. He is undefeated in regulation with a 2-0-2 record and has a .944 save percentage as well as a 1.46 goals-against average. "He had a tough summer and a tough lockout with a lot of uncertainty," Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa said of Luongo. "But he's handled it the right way and it doesn't seem to be affecting his game too much. He's been playing some of his best hockey. We're a better team when he's playing like that."

Canucks will stick with Luongo on Friday | 01/31/2013 5:16 PM
NewsThe Canucks will go back to Roberto Luongo on Friday when they host their rivals from Chicago.
ImpactThe Vancouver netminder said he would be starting his third straight game. The team is probably grateful to have him around given Cory Schneider's lackluster start, but questions of who is playing and more importantly who is not will continue to crop up until Luongo is traded. Additionally from a fantasy point of view, both goaltenders suffer from reduced value as long as they share the crease.

NewsRoberto Luongo ran with his opportunity on Wednesday, stopping all 24 Colorado Avalanche shots in a 3-0 win.
ImpactSure, the Avs are hurting right now, but that still is heartening for those who gambled on Bobby Lou. Alain Vigneault has a tough choice to make for Friday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks: stick with the streaking Luongo or give Cory Schneider the vote of confidence in the form of a start?
Canucks to start Roberto Luongo vs. Avalanche | 01/30/2013 5:40 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo will get the call for Vancouver on Wednesday versus Colorado.
ImpactThe start will be his second straight and his third start in seven games. Cory Schneider has not been very impressive in the early going, while posting a 2-2-0 record, a 3.13 GAA and an .897 save percentage. Luongo has a pair of shootout defeats and no wins on his resume this year, but he also sports a much better 2.21 GAA and a .917 save percentage.
Roberto Luongo shines in 3-2 shootout loss | 01/29/2013 3:11 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo made 26 saves and stopped two of the three in the shootout but the Cancucks lost 3-2 to the LA Kings Monday night.
ImpactLuongo was terrific as he auditions for the next club he will play for in the future. We all know Luongo can dominate, and he was itching to get back on the ice and play so his performance shouldn't come as a surprise. If you have room on your bench to stash him do it because he won't last long on the waiver wire once he gets dealt.
Luongo to get the nod for Canucks on Monday | 01/28/2013 5:43 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo will get the call for Vancouver on Monday against Los Angeles.
ImpactCory Schneider allowed four goals on 27 shots versus San Jose on Sunday, so he will get the night off and Luongo will get his second start of the 2013 campaign.
Roberto Luongo: 'I've put my ego aside' | 01/26/2013 9:56 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo reiterated that he's going to keep his cool as he plays second fiddle to Cory Schneider between the pipes.
ImpactSchneider will get the nod Sunday against the Sharks. "Of course, but I've put my ego aside here and I'm trying to work hard and do my best and be ready," he's said. "We all know, and it goes without saying, that both Cory and I want to play. We're competitors but I'm not going to put myself ahead of the team." Luongo also told Canucks general manager Mike Gillis that he's not about to harp on all the trade rumors. "I don't really want to be bothered on a day-to-day basis with that stuff and I've pretty much given him the green light to do whatever."
Report: Oilers, Hawks interested in Luongo | 01/22/2013 6:58 PM
NewsThe Oilers and Blackhawks are interested in trading for Roberto Luongo, according to Bob McKenzie via TSN Radio.
ImpactMcKenzie also reports that the list of teams Luongo would block a trade to isn't actually that long. This news follows Tuesday morning's "mystery team" trade report that came straight from the lips of Canucks GM Mike Gillis. While the Panthers and Maple Leafs have been the most highly reported Luongo suitors, it seems somewhat fitting that Luongo would be shuffled off to a "mystery team" out of the blue. Stay tuned.
GM says that potential Luongo deal in place | 01/22/2013 10:04 AM
NewsThe Vancouver Sun is reporting that General Manager Mike Gillis said that there is a potential deal for Roberto Luongo in place.
Impact"We have a potential deal in place with one team that has to do something with another player that they have ?" and it's not who anybody thinks it is ?" and so we have to wait. (But) we've been offered packages that don't fit what our plan is, what we need," Gillis said. The two teams prominently mentioned have been Florida and Toronto so it seems that both are not in the equation at this time. Do not forget that Luongo has a no-trade contract and he could veto any potential trade. Stay tuned.
Roberto Luongo and Canucks drops 2nd | 01/21/2013 1:41 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo stopped 30 of 32 shots for the Canucks in a 3-2 shootout loss to Edmonton Sunday night.
ImpactThe naming of Luongo as starter for this game could have created an unintended controversy had the Canucks won, especially since Cory Schneider was pulled in the middle of Saturday night's opener. Despite the fact Luongo plated reasonably well, Schneider is all but guaranteed to start the next contest for Vancouver.
Canucks go with Roberto Luongo vs. Oilers | 01/20/2013 5:16 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo was named the Vancouver Canucks' starter against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
ImpactIt wouldn't be wise to read too much into this decision, although it gives Luongo a chance to be an asset in fantasy. He can either steal some starts from Cory Schneider or improve his trade value with some strong play. It's certainly a headache for Schneider owners, but one cannot blame the Canucks after a rough Saturday.
Luongo sees action despite starting on bench | 01/20/2013 3:55 AM
NewsDon't count Roberto Luongo out as the Canucks starter just yet, as Cory Schneider's season-opening flop (5 goals on 15 shots) may have earned Luongo the next start.
ImpactAlthough Schneider's performance was pretty bad, don't expect Luongo to collect consistent starts until he earns them with his play on the ice. Luongo allowed two goals on 10 shots in relief Saturday night.
Luongo-to-Leafs trade now seems unlikely | 01/18/2013 12:34 PM
NewsThe Toronto Maple Leafs no longer seem like a probable trading partner for Roberto Luongo.
ImpactThe Canucks and Maple Leafs were reportedly working on a proposal that involved Nazem Kadri, Tyler Bozak, and a second round pick at one point. However, Toronto went out of its way to make room on the roster for Kadri by trading Matthew Lombardi and waiving Tim Connolly. New Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis might also recently stated "I'm not going to give up youth for older players." It seems like Toronto is committed to a youth movement that doesn't mesh well with the concept of training some of their young talent for a 33-year-old goaltender.
Gillis defends Luongo's long-term contract | 01/13/2013 7:08 PM
NewsCanucks GM Mike Gillis doesn't think Roberto Luongo's long-term contract is a negative when it comes to trading him.
Impact"There's been a lot more interest in Roberto than people wanted to recognize because the contract was onerous or difficult," Gillis argued. "That has never been mentioned to me by one team. I know some people like to make a big deal of that but it's a very friendly contract for a lot of reasons. That's one of the reasons why in the new collective agreement there are penalties and you can't sign these types of contracts because they are favorable. So contract is not an issue." Luongo's annual cap hit is very reasonable at this time, but the fact that he's signed through 2021-22 is a drawback. Gillis doesn't sound like someone in a rush to trade Luongo and if that's really the case than both Luongo and Cory Schneider's fantasy value will be negatively impacted as the two will be forced to spread the workload relatively evenly.
Luongo doesn't mind playing for Vancouver | 01/12/2013 12:15 AM
NewsRoberto Luongo doesn't think the Vancouver Canucks need to rush to trade him.
Impact"I told [general manager Mike Gillis] I was ready to go as long as it took," Luongo said. "Whether it's a couple days, next week, two weeks, at the end of the season, it's totally fine with me." A number of teams might be interested in his services, including the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, and Edmonton Oilers. At the same time, because of his cap hit and the length of his contract, it will be hard for the Canucks to find a suitor that's willing to meet their preferred asking price.
Roberto Luongo to report to Vancouver's camp | 01/10/2013 8:31 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo is in Vancouver and he's expected to report for training camp with the Canucks.
Impact"He's an important member of our organization and like any other player under contract to us, he'll be in camp," said assistant GM Laurence Gilman. Luongo's presence at camp and for the start of the season will be a distraction for team until he is traded because Cory Schneider is projected to be the team's starter. Toronto and Florida have been mentioned as Luongo's major suitors, but teams like Philadelphia, Chicago and Edmonton may be the mix as well.
Flyers interested in Roberto Luongo | 01/09/2013 9:59 PM
NewsThe Flyers are interested in Roberto Luongo, according to Enrico Ciccone of TVA Sports.
Enrico Ciccone on Twitter
ImpactTSN's James Duthie has since confirmed this report, but clarifies to say that it's just an inquiry as of now. The obvious problem here is that Ilya Bryzgalov still has eight years and $41 million remaining on his deal. If he doesn't shape up this season, the Flyers could use a compliance buyout on him in June. Luongo has 10 years, $47.3 million left on his deal. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren denied the rumors to the Philadelphia Daily News' Frank Seravalli: "That made me chuckle. Safe to say they aren't true. They have no basis or merit."
Roberto Luongo 'open' to what future holds | 01/07/2013 4:26 PM
NewsRoberto Luongo has reportedly given Vancouver GM Mike Gillis "the green light" to pursue whatever is best for the team regarding his future with the club.
ImpactTrade talk is expected to heat up involving Luongo now that the NHL season is back on and once the CBA is finalized there should be plenty of discussions between Gillis and other general managers. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers were rumored to be at the forefront over the summer and that probably won't change now. Luongo said, "I have a lot of respect for Toronto, Brian Burke and the Leafs. ... I'm open to a lot of ideas right now. I don't want to corner myself, especially since I might have to start the season in Vancouver or play the whole season there. Who knows?" For the time being, he is getting ready to attend training camp with the Canucks.
